Apprenticeship Week will take place from 6 - 10 February 2012.
The aim of the week is to improve awareness of Apprenticeships and raise their profile. The theme this year is Get with Apprenticeships and will showcase the talents, skills and commitment of real apprentices and their employers.
The National Apprenticeship Service has produced a toolkit to provide more information about the week and how you can get involved. It is now available to download at: www.apprenticeships.org.uk.
Skills for Care will be promoting Apprenticeships in social care through a number of activities during Apprenticeship Week. These will include a series of videos case studies and a dedicated Apprenticeship bulletin. More information will be available on our website - visit www.skillsforcare.org.uk/apprenticeships and click on the news and activities page.
Introducing the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment

The programme is due to be implemented in September 2012 and will succeed the existing Newly Qualified Social Worker (NQSW) programmes.

Workforce Development Fund
2011/12 is a transitional year as vocational qualifications change from national vocational qualification (NVQs) offered under the national qualifications framework to new qualifications offered under the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF). Skills for Care is committed to supporting the sector during this transition and is taking the following action in order to support our WDF members in both the long and short term:
- Extending the range of QCF units that are eligible for claiming workforce development funding to include all level 2 and 3 units and adults pathway in the level 5 diploma.
- Extending the deadline for NVQ unit claims which now need to have been completed by 16 March 2012 and submitted by 30 March 2012
For more information visit Workforce Development Fund.
Keeping risk person-centred
Skills for Care has created new support products to emphasise a person-centred approach to risk. A person-centred approach seeks to focus on people's rights to have the lifestyle that they choose, including the right to make 'bad' decisions. The person-centred thinking tools help people and those who care about them to think in positive and productive ways about how to ensure that they can achieve the changes they want to see, while keeping the issue of risk in its place.

A 'top ten' of improved knowledge areas
Issue 17 of the NMDS-SC Briefing series stands back to consider how much our knowledge of the adult social care workforce has improved in the last six years. It identifies 'top ten' areas where prior to the NMDS-SC, little or no information existed. New knowledge areas include how NMDS-SC information has been used to estimate and project the size and structure of the workforce as well as facilitating a better understanding of pay, use of migrant workers and of individual sectors.
It is available at: http://www.nmds-sc-online.org.uk/research/researchdocs.aspx?id=1.
